It was a pious act to offer up women as prostitutes for the temples of Aphrodite. Xenophon of Corinth, an athlete of religious bent, swore that if he won the foot race and the pentathlon, he would offer a contingent of prostitutes to Aphrodite. He won. The temple was endowed with 100 new prostitutes.
